Paying the Troll Toll

Last summer I took a risk and signed up for a ten miler (called the Tenacious Ten) in Seattle for April, 2018. Sponsored by my team/the run company Oiselle, I thought it might be a nice excuse to travel to an area I had shockingly never been to before.

When you think of Seattle, what do you picture?

When I told J the news that we were going to Seattle in the spring to watch me race, he informed me that he found spectating races far worse than running them (already a low bar for him) so if he absolutely had to come with me, he would need to be signed up for the race. Done and done before he could finish the thought.

My friend and teammate Kate and her husband were signed up for the race as well, so it seemed like a good opportunity for a joint trip to the other coast.

Now, as you've figured out unless this is the first time you're reading anything on this blog, by the time the race came around I couldn't actually run. 😬 oops. So now I'd dragged J 3,000 miles so I could watch him run. Oh, the irony.

I've always heard that Seattle can be dreary and overcast. It was anything but while we were there.

Seriously.

Besides the mountain views and delicious coffee, there's also one brewery per block in every part of Seattle. I assume it's written into their zoning regulations, two breweries per corner. I can't even count how many different beers I had from how many different establishments over the course of one long weekend, and beer isn't even my drink of choice. (I also don't really like coffee, but that didn't stop me from partaking a few times. When in Seattle, amiright?)

The best part about the breweries was not actually the delicious beer...but the prevalence of dogs. Yes, "Puppy Hour" was alive and well in Seattle and there were more of them in the breweries than babies, a ratio I approve of.

Making friends in breweries is surprisingly easy

I'm also assuming that it's a requirement that each restaurant be unique and interesting and have delicious food. Either that or we had an incredible knack for finding those places.

At the Public Market, we tasted cheeses and chocolates and jams...oh the jams. J ended up bringing home some California reaper raspberry jam that he only just recently finished off, much to his disappointment. I found a lavender cream to help me sleep (can confirm, it works 😴). Somehow we avoided purchasing a cinnamon bun the size of a baby elephant, but only just barely.

Didn't get a ride on the Ferris Wheel. Regrets, regrets.

In Fremont post-brewery, we took a walk under the bridge to see the infamous Fremont Troll. Apparently, in a fit of generosity, the city asked the Fremont residents to choose a sculpture to go under the bridge. Like the wonderfully imaginative people they are, they chose a troll. So much better and more appropriate than some abstract sculpture or depiction of a dead war hero - everyone knows that trolls live under bridges, duh.

The men were far too cool to go up to the top of the Needle with me and Kate, so we experienced that gloriousness alone. They're renovating it, so it was more construction site than swanky Needle paradise, but the view was breathtaking and the discount for putting up with the hammering totally worth it.

They weren't too cool to join as at the Sculpture Park, though.

I think I need to hit up Boston as a tourist sometime, see it through a different lens, cause it doesn't seem nearly as nice as Seattle to me now.

There was a race, too. Remember that ten miler? Yeah, that one. It was in this beautiful place called Gas Works Park, home of a former "gasification plant" (gasification is a word, google told me so).

And J totally crushed it (4th in his AG!)  and Kate and her hubby were impressive too (if that sounds like an afterthought it's not meant to be, but being married to J means I'm totally biased about everything he does and feel a need to flaunt his awesomeness at all times).

The Cowbell Corner was a little smaller than I'm used to, although we figured out early on that it was all pregnant/recent moms/injured runners. Basically any Oiselle bird who was able to run and in the area had signed up.

We also had the privilege of meeting and cheering on some of our favorite elite runners as well as many of our favorite Nest-ers like Sally and Lesko.

Cheers, Seattle! Thanks for a wonderful trip, we will be back and hopefully someday I will actually get to run the Tenacious Ten ✊

Also: obligatory reminder that I'm still raising money for Back on My Feet for my first race back this year, the Falmouth Road Race (and yes, in lieu of spectating, J is now signed up for it as well!)💚 Hoping to raise enough to cover last month's rent deposit for someone 😄 Thank you all for your generosity so far!
